Your Denture Options

When most people think of dentures, they picture ill-fitting false teeth that look nothing like natural teeth. Fortunately, modern dentures aren’t like that. The dentures we provide at Wilton Dental Care fit precisely and look completely natural.

Partial Dentures

If you have multiple missing teeth, but the surviving teeth are healthy enough to remain, Dr. Arbuckle can design a partial denture to fill the gaps in your smile. The design of your unique denture will depend on the locations of your missing teeth, but many partial dentures stay in place by attaching directly to natural teeth.

Full Dentures

Patients with complete tooth loss are candidates for traditional full dentures. Our dentist and his team will use impressions of your bite to design a prosthetic that fits precisely in your mouth. Traditional dentures are made from lifelike dental materials, and they stay in place through suction and denture adhesive.

Implant-Supported Dentures

For ultimate security and stability, we encourage all of our patients with missing teeth to consider dental implants. Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots that connect dentures directly to the jawbone. When you choose an implant-supported denture, there will be no chance of it slipping out of place, giving you comfort and confidence.

Traditional Dentures vs. Implant Dentures

UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCES

Dr. Arbuckle collaborates with some of the best oral surgeons in Connecticut to offer dental implants to our patients. When it’s time to decide between traditional or implant-supported dentures, here are some factors for you to consider:

Implant-supported dentures are more secure

Traditional dentures are designed with a plastic base that covers the gums, and they rely on a tight fit and adhesive materials to stay in place. While the dentures that our dentist designs today are more secure than dentures have ever been, there’s always a chance that traditional dentures will shift in your mouth when you chew or speak. Dental implants, on the other hand, are artificial tooth roots that an oral surgeon can place through your gums and into your jawbone. The implants will fuse naturally with your bone, and then Dr. Arbuckle can secure a denture to the implants. Because they are anchored in the bone, implant-supported dentures should never slip out of position.

Implants prevent jawbone atrophy

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone is no longer stimulated by the tooth roots, and the bone begins to shrink and recede. This leads to reduced bite strength, and it can cause your mouth and jaw to develop an aged, sunken appearance. Because traditional dentures simply rest on top of the gums, they do nothing to address this issue. Dental implants, however, replace the lost tooth roots and maintain the strength of the jawbone while helping you avoid an aged appearance around your mouth.

Implant-supported dentures do cost more

Really, the only drawback of implant-supported dentures is that they are more costly than their traditional counterparts. However, when you consider the long-term benefits of implants, it becomes clear that they are a worthy investment. They are the only restorative option that will keep your jawbone strong and healthy, and they allow you to eat all of your favorite foods. Our team can work with your insurance company and help you secure financing so that you can afford this life-changing form of dentistry.
